Two Cells by Peter Halley

Once a country joined together
Now split and doomed forever
A battle for a law
No one saw
A country once at peace
now split in two
they are battling each other
brothers and sisters
misters and misses
with every one gone
its not the same at dawn
the war has started
now I just farted
it sounded like a bang
and my family ran to change
that fart made us move
away from this land
we abandoned our home
to live in Rome.
Its a one way trip
and I will not phone home.

Hidden in the Shadows

Alone again, no sounds, no light, no nothing; I'm stuck in this stupid basement until my parents return from their five day vacation. Although people think that being home alone is fun, and my brothers are always saying that I am lucky that I don't get to go to school every day. I want to go; I'm not even a loud to go outside any more. Ten more years of my life are going stuck in this house. I will be here my whole life rotting in this hell whole; I need to escape. Beneath the cover of "Among the Hidden" by Margaret Haddix is a world with many challenges, challenges making life seem almost impossible. Margaret created an uptight government with many rules and laws, and a family with many problems. This family is affected by two giant laws in their world, first law; no family can have over two children. Second law; you get told to do, like if you are a farmer, you are told what to planet, how much to planet and even what to buy without money being sent to the family. Adding on to the challenges in the community this family’s life is on a farm, has three children, and is poor. Many countries have people on the verge of going completely broke, without any help, but this world is almost the same as china. Most laws and the government style are the same.

“Among the Hidden” is a realistic government styled story; it’s just like China's government. Both the book and the country have many rules, telling the citizens what they can, and can’t do. In the book they shut down soda factories, chip factories and everything that is unhealthy. Although that is good for you, imagine people coming into your house and taking all of you sweet delicious food away, you would never be a loud to eat or drink anything that doesn't make the governments standards. That’s how what Luke and his family have to deal with every day of their lives. Sometimes if you are a farmer they make you sell and buy animals even if these animals are your pride and joy, your money tree, they will make you sell it weather you like it or not. There are laws left and right in these countries. A Law that applies in the book as well as real life you can only have a certain amount of kids. Although in China you can only have one child, in the book there is limit to only two children. These laws have been a struggle to get by in Luke's family, the population police are now starting to get suspicious about Luke and his new friend Jen for being the third as they call it, and they have to sell their money making hogs. Many people might like this type of government type but it's a hard one to live by because one slip up and you are in the slammer or on the kill list. Just as the government style in the book as well as in real life so is Luke's life is very realistic.

Most kids think that their lives are so awful and they might be, but they don’t match up to Luke's life. Imagine a whole life being alone without any of your friends and not being able to have a sleep over or even a birthday party. Some people might have bits and pieces of this life style but they don't have the whole thing. Yes some people are poor, and some people might not have any friends but one day they will, but for Luke, he will have to live ten more years in that house not going outside and having any friends. Imagine that would be going from kindergarten to ninth grade without any friends no one to talk to besides your family, never leaving the house, not doing anything besides hiding. If this was my life, no way would I like having a part in it. This would be like living in hell. Nowhere to go, no malls, no television, no video games, no computer and this is a part of everyone's daily life. No a lot of kids wouldn't make it through; I know that I wouldn't be home alone, with the power off for two hours would be horrible enough but ten more years would be dreadful.

During a kids life time they need to have some contact with other people. Being home all day is a kid’s worst nightmare. A kid’s life is all about being on the computer, hanging out with friends, and their phone. Without contact to the outside world a kid wouldn’t be a kid, they would be like a tinny adult. Reading books and making things out of yarn is not what a kid hopes to do for the next couple years of their life. Be glad that you have rights and friends because somewhere in the world they’re kids just like Luke’s life suffering. Be grateful you have a fantastic life because someone out there doesn't.
