How do you feel when you are lonely, so lonely that the only thing you want to do is go to a café and drink till your drunk? Some of you don’t know what that feels like, nor do I but somehow I can connect. The man in the story has nothing to live for, nor anyone to come home to, except for his house. The loneliness is eating him inside out; he has made attempts of suicide, that right there tells you something. Some things are not right with his life and he needs to change something. Hemingway made this character for a reason. Hemingway is telling his own life experiencethe life he doesn't want to have, what he wants is a woman, and a family.
Hemingway has put himself in this particular story as two people, a deaf old man that has nothing to live for, and an old waiter, with only a café to work at. The characters feel sad and no one to come home to. Most men in their lives that are married or have someone close to them are happy. A marriage is very important in a women’s, or man’s life. Hemingway is sending a message to people saying that he is in pain, not physically, but mentally. He’s was expressing his feelings through his writing, but that wasn’t enough. You know a person can only take so much, of being alone or being teased until he or she gives up. Hemingway didn’t have anyone meaning no one to talk to or one to express his feelings with. If you don’t express what is wrong, you will stay sad, mad or depressed, and these feels make you feel like you are in prison, nowhere to go, and feel like you are stuck in your own self pity. That’s what Hemingway went through, until it went too far, and he eventually committed suicide. Hemingway wanted to pretend that he was a different person so he created a person that he wanted to be like, a person that he could have been. Making himself a new life, a new character, a character that has something to go home to, something to live for.
This story has struck a connection with me, I have found out how depressing it must be to live alone. Every day after you get home from where ever you were, you won’t get a hello or how was your day. No, you will come home to only an empty house, with only noise of your floor boards creaking has you make it across the floor. I know now, how important it is to have someone close to you. Hemingway has put a crystal clear picture in my mind about his whole life, in only a short three page story; it almost felt like he was sitting right next to me telling me about his inner feelings.
